Italy, Italia 90, a great start for the sake of a tragic end
An article on the Italia 90 World Cup which brought about Italy to the final only to be rejected by Argentina, Maradona, front side and penalties.
It was the end of spring 1990 and I was living in Warsaw Poland, where at that time I was attending a course at the Polish University of Warsaw, where I just happened to meet Danilo Facco, Pordenone, Italy. Danilo and I were to be friends and I would also be introduced to Danilo Catallini, director of the Italian Cultural Centre in Warsaw at the time. This is the place for the World Cup would open to all Italians or descendants of whom, like me, to come to Italy to see the matches of a large 56 "screen, thanks to more generous invitation Catallini.
This was also a time of my life in my dedication to photography was at its height when he was taking on a role of film a day and really developing my talent even having my photos published for the first time ever that year. This is because I was able to thoughts speak my mind without having to think too much of words and could only understand about all that I ever heard that did not extend to extremely minute subjects complicated.
However, at this point in my life, photography was my greatest passion to the point of shelving my love almost entirely for football, to the point that I had almost forgotten that the World Cup to come. I even had to be reminded that the final Champions League Danilo approaching and I look back now I think I would have missed it not been for my friend who told me what day it is going to play. This meant more to me from AC Milan had reached the end of this year and would be playing against Benfica of Portugal, who finished 1-0 beating.
As for me at that time, besides being a dedicated photographer I had just recently turned 23 and had hair that was shoulder length or at least get his since was not cut from the year before. To be more specific the last time I had had my hair cut was the day I entered the "Navy U.S. ", only to be discharged two months later, with the certainty that involve had been my biggest folly (though not my only) and that the Navy wanted say "never again volunteer yourself." I was in the apartment of one of those friends of mine at the time turned on the TV and much to my interest was a football game. It was Argentina vs. Cameroon who at first thought it was a game of the World Cup, but a nice until I realized I was playing and realized that this was the first game of the tournament. I naturally was aware that the World Cup due to begin, but I thought I had lost count of the exact day he would.
As soon as the game itself, I would catch him when he was near the end with Cameron to my surprise and in the lead 1-0 thanks to goals scored by Oman Biyik, in the 67th minute of the game. One of the goals, I would like to see at the end of game highlights showing how this man, probably a leap feet off the ground to get to that ball. As I picked up the game near the end, the mark of 80 minutes all I have to see if there was Argentina's desperate struggle to get that tie that never came. I must confess Argentina has been lost as expected happy not have to face Italy in the World Cup and has even been hopeful they would get eliminated before the stage where they would to play in Italy. Maradona, after all was still young at 29 and a man to be respected and feared, as it was in great shape. This is precisely what we proved that taking for years, Napoli to their second "would be a title in three years but did not repeat as the best scorer of what would have been the third time in his career.
All it took was the first game, although I did not get to see all of it to get into the right frame of mind to see the rest World Cup, as I like in the last three World Cups that I had seen was once again pulling Italy to win and this time I was waiting for Italy to be crowned champion for the 4th time. Italy, after all, playing at home and were always a favorite to win any tournament so why not win one at home. I still do not know many of the players on the national team of Italy at the moment, apart from Donadoni and the rest of AC Milan players like Baresi and Maldini, not that I I was sure they were on the national team.
It was in the opening match later I received a call from Danilo, asking if I wanted see the first game of Italy against Austria at the offices of the Italian Cultural Institute in Warsaw. Being a place with all the comforts that I have already mentioned the fact that many Member of the Italian community in Warsaw will be present invitation however given the limited space would be limited to the Italians or those of only the same blood type. This meaning I could watch the games there, but I would have to speak Italian to prove my ancestral connection to Italy is not my last name would not have done Truvianni the same.
I do not think about it twice accepted the offer of Danilo and arranged to meet him the next day, half an hour before the start the game in a cafe near my apartment called "Studio H," which was at that time what could be hailed as the place to be. Danilo and I still do not have much in the way of time that day to enjoy Studio M, since it only had half an hour to reach the Italian Cultural Centre (CPI) for the first game of Italy against Austria. As for the CPI, although it was far from Studio M who were required to walk 10 minutes to 15 minutes made us leave before as we wanted to be on time not only to get a good seat, but to give ourselves to our countrymen and listen "Fratelli D 'Italia" (National anthem of Italy).
When we reached the place with little time to spare before the match, I thought it was not sung as I had expected it to be and that perhaps only 10 or 12 is present. Italian community of Warsaw not be as great in those days as it is today. Quick exchanged greetings before the start of the match that Italy is playing in the Olympic Stadium in Rome and as the game began there was something magical about it. I have that feeling, suddenly, of wanting to win to Italy had not played since Italy in the European Cup held in Germany two years earlier. The game ended 1-0 in favor of Italy and at that point we feel confident we could win it all or at least reach the second round, as it would have been almost a national embarrassment if Italy became the first host country not to make it past the first round in a world cup. Especially one that made it possible for 16 teams of 24 to go to the second round. It was incredible the way though, that had been known at the beginning of the game had become close and even friends. In a way all those gathered for more than a game but a common desire to win the same nation, not only this match but the tournament as they had done eight years earlier in Spain. This was the magic of Italian football and once again was back to me and I could see around me and I was sure he was obliged to remain so unless and until Italy won the world cup.
In the weeks that followed, naturally, as a football (calcio in Italian) of the fan, given the other games, although Italy remained the most important to me. Germany made an impressive start to seem like tanks, and to cut Yugoslavia 4-1 while Uruguay was able to a 0-0 draw with Spain despite having a penalty called on his behalf it is clear that control was lost and much of the game. The game against the USA, was harder than originally thought but won thanks to a beautiful goal by Giannini. This in a boring game what else held few highlights apart from the goal and Italy lost their third penalty in the world as many cups. The U.S., for all his qualities in the defense was only close to scoring once, but fortunately, Ferri was standing in line to avoid what would have been the tying goal.
However, despite Italy to bore the tifossi had won their second game and although he had secured his place in the second round because there was no way he would not go to the next round with four points, at least as second-place team. The question was, could win their group and qualify to the next round as the team first? This of course could do, but they would have to beat Czechoslovakia, which had also won their first two games but with a better goal difference of 6-1, while Italy was 2-0.
In the third set, those of us who made a point of going to the ICC to see play in Italy had become a sort of family, taking an interest in other's lives and what we were doing in Poland. When I was the one known as the photographer, as my great Minolta camera with me everywhere I went. As confidence I had taken a slight turn in direction after just beating the U.S. who had lost 5-1 to Czechoslovakia, but still felt I could go all the way to the end and beyond. Setting aside the pessimism had four points in two games and had not conceded a goal, but we had to win against Czechoslovakia, nothing more by our moral then.
Italy got into this game a good start as Schillaci playing as a starter for the first time put us ahead to the 8 minute mark. His goal was screaming for everyone as it really brought us back to the level we wanted to see in Italy especially after misfortune, draw near to the United States at home. Schillaci had been responsible for Carnevali, who had not met expectations and thanks to him now would to qualify for the next round in first place, that is, if we stay ahead in the score.
Czechoslovakia in what was the rest of that first half had a goal of their own states of mind which made him lose at first, but fortunately was canceled unfairly would add a non-existent offside. As to the first round, many interesting things happened, for example the Netherlands and Ireland ended in a tie for second place with the exact goal difference and head to head encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, something that today would be a problem, but then was given the third place also may qualify. In this case the Netherlands was given third place and had to play Germany, while Ireland against Romania. Uruguay had qualified by the skin their teeth with a last minute goal against South Korea which gave them a 1-0 win although some felt the game should have been completed by the referee before. In reality if it were not for the last almost second goal then Uruguay would not have qualified as have had two points, just as Austria and Scotland, but have lost due to these two countries had a ratio of goals in the 2-3, while Uruguay would have been 1-3. Germany looked good but against Colombia, which also has a goal had been reduced minute lost a level or two perhaps because they were already qualified, but Colombia still have to play well in the 1-1 draw.
A me, however none of that mattered because together with the rest of the "tifossi" felt we could get to the end and win the last game and only had confirmed that even after I began to feel like champions. As for me I had one of the most terrifying moments of my life when one day before of our match against Uruguay, I awoke with what is undeniably the greatest pain in my life. I was urinating blood last night, but did not pay much attention when but next morning the pain was like a knife in me that prompted me to call an ambulance. I must say I had no idea what it was for fear that he either something wrong with my appendix, or perhaps worse than the pain was unbearable. I had never thought of death, but at that moment I felt close to him. However, proved to be a simple kidney stone that the doctor explained to me in English was so painful for a man as it was for a woman to deliver a child. It is a so it was strange because my sister in Rome, who had their children through sovereign had not experienced the pain of a normal delivery but nevertheless had gone through a kidney stone that was put into Ecuador. It was at Studio M that I had a shot of Johnnie Walker red but in all honesty, I would have preferred Glenfidich and should have been told if they had to but sometimes you have to conform.
Danilo and I met in the study M as had become our usual pre-game and told him much to his shock about how he had spent the night in the hospital, but had come just in time for the party. Uruguay has always been difficult for Italy, its style is one of the physical play. The last time Italy and Uruguay had played in a World Cup had been 20 years earlier in 1970. This in a game that not only failed to produce a goal in a 0-0 draw, but to do even these stages in a match that was one of the most boring ever seen in a world championship or anywhere else for that matter.
Once on the International Criminal Court with us almost late we took our seats for what would be closed first half ending 0-0. then it was clear that this World Cup was not would be no great victories as most games are limited to scores of 1-0 or 2-1, as was the case with most games, as even a match between Argentina and Brazil had produced only one goal. Time however was as we waited for the second half telling me all about my plight previous days, which brought some relief to all those who had come to know that apparently had come through it can be. The second half started Schillaci and again in 65 minutes would be marked with a great shot from outside the box to bring joy and cries of goal in the CPI again. I remembered to watch Argentina play against Yugoslavia in the hope that Argentina lost and how close he came to being eliminated. Yugoslavia dominated for most of the game despite having one of their players sent early 0-0, yet how they would end, after regulation and overtime. Maradona played that day was lost perhaps one of the games inspired by at least I had seen him and just as it seemed as if Argentina was out after he and his Troglio penalty kicks, salvation came from his porter. Goycochea saved three penalties during the shootout that brought Argentina to the semifinals against Italy.
I remember thinking that Italy had never lost to Argentina in a World Cup, but to some extent Italy had never won either in a sense that they had been eliminated. For example your first game against each other in a World Cup was in 74 in the first round. This game ended in a draw that Argentina benefited more from them, and not as Italy qualified with Poland to the next round. So in a sense by holding Argentina to Italy to a draw had really won. The upcoming match between Italy and Argentina took place 78 in Argentina and Italy won 1-0, but it mattered little for both teams qualified to the next round. Argentina really win the world championship that year, while Italy entered the room. The next game was in Spain 82 and Italy repeated as winners, but then again Argentina have been eliminated in the same way. This is because Argentina lost its next game to Brazil and Italy could have even gone to the semifinals, but had been brought to Argentina as they went on to defeat Brazil. The next World Cup came, New Mexico 86 and Italia was to face Argentina in the first round and did so in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw which was minor as both teams went through the same thing. Now would be Italy against Argentina at Italia 90 for what would be his fifth in the world cups in a row. This I I'm sure is a record for the number of times the two teams meet each other in consecutive World Cups. With respect however, the record for two teams have faced each other most of the time in the history of world cup, surprisingly held by Brazil and Sweden. This is due to the fact they have faced between it six times, with Sweden not even able to win one.
As always I wanted to win, but Italy still afraid to tell those around me my mother was from Argentina and perhaps especially angry that Argentina would happen to victory and end. I decided to wait until the end and after Italy had won for the cat of the bag. The game would be played in "Napoli Stadio San Paolo" in what for the last few years had been the home of Diego Armando Maradona and the truth is that Napoli fans had come to idolize the man. There was lead, which had never won anything in a EUFA Cup victory with two national titles. Maradona was practically a god in Naples at the time (and still), but this time was going to be playing against Italy, which made difficult for many a fan to know where their loyalties lay during the game. For my part, it was something terrible would happen but I do not know why. Italy still not yield a goal in the World Cup while Argentina had struggled to reach the semifinal, scoring only four goals in his way while Italy, usually unknown by as much offense that scored seven times. The second half began with Italy and Argentina dominate covered his back and just when it seemed that could put it away with a second goal Argentina scored one of their own in the mark of 67 minutes to level matters in a Part. Italy without But mostly the pressure of playing at home and in a world cup had to go forward, while Argentina, apparently waited for the sanctions, indeed, all we have to decide by the end of the match in a tie.
Italy after the end equalizer to the delight of his followers brought Argentina Baggio in place of the ineffective Vialli, who had not really shown much during the game. Baggio has brought energy and ideas to the offense of Italy however, the game was still hotly contested in a match were marked on both sides was strict. The match ended at 1-1, for what is essential overtime, although perhaps Italy held an advantage in conditioning since Argentina was playing its second overtime in as many matches, while Italy had not yet been taken beyond the regular 90 minutes. At this time nothing seemed safe for Italy, but was still missing something that Most did not, tensions were high as nervous as the first overtime period started. Sudden death would not be in the form of a golden goal or even a silver one, which meant the team was winning at the end of the first half of overtime would be declared winner, but 30 minutes of football, regardless of what happened. How are suffering at the moment only those who have watched their teams play to know for sure or who have been naturally the field as any error could mean being out and having to wait four more years to hopefully in the same place but in Italy playing at home, the pressure was to please their fans.
Overtime up and all back to their seats and, although Italy was clearly on the offensive for now with Argentina now focusing on defense of what they had, the game was still difficult as the Italian attack after attack was met with a strong defense of the defense not only Argentina, but their goalkeeper solid Goycochea. This one player (like Schillaci) had not even been a starter in his team at the start of the tournament, but had been brought then Pumpido (cup of Argentina who won the World Cup in Mexico goalkeeper 86) broke his leg.
A small break came to Italy when 13 minutes in the first half of overtime, Guisti was red-carded for a brutal lack of Baggio, who even left him with blood on his forehead. Donadoni came later, we were in the crucial phase of sanctions, could be completed almost instantly. Donadoni hit the ball but save Goycochea, the objective of not fall and our hearts.
