Q & A About Callaway wedges
I spoke with the guru of the wedge on Friday, and here are his answers to some of the presentations more interesting.
How would you compare and contrast the designs and technologies used in Callaway wedges with other brands. What makes the Callaway wedges different?
A lot of people copied the wedge designs developed in Cleveland golf for years, as the 588 wedges but I would not do that. I wanted to do something a little different.
When I had the opportunity to get back to the club and start making wedges Callaway I wanted to use the purest form of making plates, and that means forging. Also wanted to use the softest material to give the most golfers feel, and that carbon steel is 1020. So I wanted to have the best house in the forge in the world, who is in Japan, which wedges. After putting all these things together, We have been having a great time doing irons and wedges here at Callaway.
But what makes our wedges really different from other manufacturers is the slot We have aggressively developed in partnership with Phil Mickelson.
Phil always tests a new hitting wedge shots from 40 yards, and hit the shot hard. The AA first shot hit him with super-aggressive groove that we have created for him was a white road material cover up the club face. He looked down and said, "Yes, that is my groove Mack Daddy. "We loved you, so named our groove, the Mack Daddy.
With the new wedges JAWS (above), which wanted to reduce the shape of the wedge when you're looking down at the address, and wanted a smaller head. I think it gives a feeling that golfers can take the leading edge on the ball more easily. We also implemented a very aggressive C-grind on the ground that makes it very versatile.
For the amateur, How do you go about treating and collect a special sole grind wedges?
It all depends on how much you practice and how many different shots want to be able to hit with his wedge, especially a high lofted wedge.
If you are the type of player who likes to open the face and hit higher, softer landing shots, then find a routine heel relief supplies but does not add too much bounce in the process. Opening of the face automatically adds rebound, but some grinds create more than others.
If you do not practice that often goes with the routine that serves more bounce will help you get out of the sand more easily.
Each wedge needs to have some positive amount rebound so you can slide instead of digging through the grass. Remember, you never want to hit a wedge shot with the leading edge, you always want to use the plant as the contact point to ground.
What is your opinion honestly of the next slot USGA rule changes?
I do not think the new rules are necessary slot. Instead of doing something with the rows, we have always sense, like Jack Nicklaus and Sandy Tatum (former President of the USGA), which should do something with the ball in place. Creating a ball of "tour" reduce turning over half driving distance, putting more emphasis on hitting good shots, and maintain historically significant playing golf without adding excessive length.
Originally, the USGA gave us precise guidelines on the slot again, but do not want to be limited to only one slot V. Therefore, in July 2009 we have developed a groove that meet your specifications and taken to the USGA for approval. The USGA told us that the intent of the rule was reduce turnover, and that while the new slot complied with the rules, created too much back. We told them we were given a ruler, and followed him. It took about $ 300,000 to develop such a groove, but the USGA, said: "No"
Callaway will always design to the nth degree of performance, otherwise someone going to do. That's what competition is about. But the USGA changed the rule again anyway. It's like we're playing a football game and as we are about to score a touchdown that moved the goal line and made the field of 110 yards.
So we had to go back and develop another slot again, which made us a little late to get the clubs to players on our tour.
Look, I do not blame the USGA for what they are trying to do. Not even the fault of the management of the USGA, they have a job hard, but I just think changing the ball would have been the best way to go by.
Any idea on trying to get as much Faulty equipment can turn in 2010?
Because the USGA is allowing all manufacturers to design a different condition of the grooves of competition you're going to have to look at what the various manufacturers will provide. Everyone will be different. It is too early to give any opinion about the status of other companies competition drills, but I'm sure want to see them.
With our pace, we have reduced the area between the rows, and therefore had to reduce capacity slots. The rules create a relationship between the space between the grooves of the capacity of the slots. Callaway decided to go the route of putting more grooves in the face. Through of our studies we learned that the more edges can put more friction on the ball and can put spin on the ball. Hence the name of the line of wedge new JAWS.
