One of the absolutes in golf - and what is taught - is a straight left arm. First let's define what a straight left arm is not.
For most people the left arm hanging down has elbow joint. This joint is 3 to 5 degrees of the curve in it. This is what the left arm is straight.
Stretching - hyper extending - and locking the elbow is not a straight left arm! All golfers have successfully done is to increase the radius from left shoulder on the floor. This is a major cause of "fat shots!"
Henry Vardon won the British Open six times playing with a "bent" left arm.
Calvin Peete won the Players Championship and is the most accurate driver of the golf ball EVER! In 26 years to play professional golf hit a ball out of bounds! Calvin's left arm was severely bent as a result of an accident that destroyed a small child left elbow. Surgeons repaired the elbow, but remained permanently fused so that Calvin could never stretch the arm.
Calvin won 11 times on the Tour within five years - 12 total events, and his Players Championship victory. He led the Tour in accuracy for 10 straight years and led the Tour greens in regulation "three times.
Another player who had great success on the PGA Tour is Curtis Strange. Curtis won 17 times on the Tour including winning the U.S. Open back to back in 1988 and 1989.
Swing gurus referred to Curtis' left arm as "soft."
Think about this So if you were to swing a piece of string is "locked" and taunt in the back? Of course not! But what happens when you turn the ball ... becomes in a straight line!
Now I am not advocating that you intentionally bend the left arm, but I am saying is not blocked wondering what is right. The Your arms should feel like hanging ropes - in bulk. This will only power with less effort.
Remember, whatever angle your left arm hangs - slightly - just hold for the return pass and let it come out by itself on the downstroke.
