In the history of golf, the Ryder Cup has played an important role in more than seventy years. Each year golfers come to the Ryder Cup, which was organized by a variety of countries and climates courses, and each year they are rewarded with some of the most exciting matches and memorable. To understand the meaning and intensity of the Ryder Cup is necessary to understand the rich traditions and developments that have taken place in recent years, both American and European teams.
Samuel Ryder: The Birth of the Ryder Cup
There is debate among golf historians about exactly how the Ryder Cup began. Some say the original idea was developed for the first time in 1920 and the first official games played in 1921. What can be corroborated is the official game of qualifying rounds that were called for just before the Championship Open Golf 1926. The Americans formed a team to play against professionals in Great Britain in Wentworth. As the Americans were defeated, Samuel Ryder, an Englishman and a businessman from St. Albans in Hertfordshire, was present.
In 1906, Ryder was elected mayor of St. Albans and his health suffered from working too much. Air fresh and light exercise is recommended to improve their health and suggested that the golf course. Later, after becoming an avid sports fan, Abe Mitchell Ryder employees as their instructor. Mitchell was considered one of the best players of Great Britain and Ryder enjoyed watching the British team, which included Mitchell, defeating the Americans in the 1926 unofficial match. When it was suggested an official game was created, Samuel Ryder agreed to donate a solid gold trophy. He insisted that the figure of cup resemble Mitchell. The beginning of a Golf Time Honored Tradition
The Americans won the first match of the inaugural Ryder Cup. The team was captained by Walter Hagen and Johnny Farrell including, Johnny Golden, Gene Sarazen, Leo Diegel, Joe Turnesa, Bill Mehlhorn and Al Watrous. The Americans dominated the Ryder Cup in 70 years, with few exceptions, as the party of 1969, which ended in a tie 16-16 at Royal Birkdale and is considered one of the most memorable Ryder Cup ever played. In 1979 there was a significant change and players from the European Union continent began to compete for the would now be the European team in place of the British team. The American team won the 1979, 1981 and 1983 but matches became more competitive as the European team had the opportunity to bring new blood. In 1985, the European team won at the Belfry and again at Muirfield Village. It was the first victory for Europe and the first consecutive on U.S. soil.
Golf memorable and unforgettable memories
The humble beginning of the Ryder Cup was inspired by the love of a man of golf and this tradition continues today. The Ryder Cup spans over 77 years and 34 competitions. In 1989, the increased media coverage of the Ryder Cup has increased its popularity. Americans saw the Irish player Christy O'Connor victory over Fred Couples. In 1991, Americans claimed the Ryder Cup with a victory at Kiawah Island South Carolina. Then, in 1993 the Americans won another game near the bell.
In 1995, Europeans made a comeback in the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York and continued this winning streak in 1997 at Valderamma Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain. In 1999 Americans made one of the greatest comebacks ever as after a 10-6 deficit seemed impossible to the Americans defeated the European team anyway. Recently, the European team has been victorious in the match 2004 at Oakland Hills in 2006 in the K-Club in Ireland. The pressure is now on the Americans to reclaim the Ryder Cup trophy in September 2008 organized by the Country Club Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.
