History
Giraffes in front of the Sydney skyline.
Rural Bridge in 2009.
The first public zoo in New South Wales opened in 1884 at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park on a site now occupied by the Sydney Children's School and Sydney Girls High School. Inspired by a 1908 visit to the zoo in Hamburg, the secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, planning a new zoo based on the concept bar-less. After realizing that the Moore Park site was too small, the NSW Government granted 43 acres (17 hectares) of land north of Sydney Harbour. Another 9 acres (3.6 acres) were granted later in 1916.
Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view.
Rustic Bridge
The "Bridge Rural It was opened in 1915 and was one of the characteristics of Taronga Zoo first landscape. Was the main way in which visitors could cross the natural gorge extending. first Photographs show him as a romantic isolated by way of plantings. The rustic effect was created by incorporating stones into the wall and, as Aquarium, its design was reminiscent of Italian grottos. A tunnel under the bridge originally connected Aquariums Upper and Lower has been blocked at both ends and is very popular.
Later additions and changes
A critical review in 1967 led to a new emphasis on scientific conservation, education and conservation. New exhibits were built from the Houses of Platypus and night, waterfowl ponds and walkthrough Rainforest Aviary. Veterinary Quarantine Centre was a was built as an Education Center (funded by the Department of Education). Previous attractions such as elephant rides, miniature trains, the circus of monkeys and around Merry-Go-shaped educational facilities such as Friendship Farm and Seal theater.
In mid 1980, a cable was installed that allows visitors to see the zoo and the port of Sydney. It runs from the bottom of the park near the ferry dock and transports passengers to the top of the zoo.
2000 Master Plan
In 2000, TCSA initiated a 12-year master plan $ 69,000,000, most of which is spent in the Taronga Zoo. The first important element was the campus master plan of Bush's backyard. Under the plan, the Zoo received five Asian elephants from Thailand Zoo Organization for reproduction, education, long-term research and conservation program participation. The plan has met opposition Environmental activists in Thailand, which blocked the trucks carrying the elephants to Bangkok International Airport for your flight on June 5, 2006. Elephants, along with other specimens of the tropical rainforests of Asia are in the wild, "Asia" exhibition that opened in 2006 and aims to immerse visitors in a tropical rainforest environment in Asia.
A section of sea, Great Southern Ocean, opened its doors in April 2008.
Zoo Friends
Zoo Friends provides support in the form of volunteers and fundraising for Taronga and Western Plains Zoo. Members are offered experiences behind the scenes at the zoo and unlimited entry to the Zoo. Members are also eligible to volunteer to help at the zoo.
