If you find that commercial pre-stretch fabric is too expensive or just interested, you can make your own canvases. You can buy rolls of raw canvas or prepared in various sizes and qualities. Once purchased, the first thing to do is stretch a canvas of a desired size using stretcher bars.
The stretching process is quite simple. You need to purchase stretcher bars. You can find them in any serious art store the source or the Internet. Stretcher bars have corners Tongue and groove and are usually 1.25 or 2.5 inches wide. You can order in various lengths up to 72 inches.
To make a painting will have 2 sets of bars 2 equal. The four bars should fit perfectly and do not use nails. Having collected the stretcher, use a T-square to check all four corners are square.
Now, stretching a piece of cloth involves the following steps:
1) Center the table on top of a piece of fabric that is 1.5 inches larger than the table on all sides.
2) Fold the fabric around a set of two opposing bars. Using a tack (usually included with each set bar) set aside the tarpaulin to the center of the bar.
Then stretch the fabric by hand or with pliers, canvas and turn the other side in the middle of the other leg. A line flies in the form of a fold that goes from one tack to the other should now be visible.
3) Next, repeat 2) with the other two sides opposite sides of the fabric. A diamond-shaped pattern should now be visible.
4) From here, continues from the middle of one of the bars and add a tack every 3 inches or less to reach the corners. At corners, well bend one end of the fabric on the other end and attach the corner piece of the bar another tactic.
Do not trim the excess fabric. Instead, sometimes in the back of the couch and heading down if it is necessary to stretch the canvas in the future.
5) If you notice any wrinkles in the fabric, you can remove one or two tacks in the right places, pull the fabric taut, and replace the tacks. To remove small patchy areas on the canvas, moisten the back of the area and allow fabric to dry.
6) In general, the stretcher bars come with a set of keys call, ie wooden wedges. These keys fit into slots on the inside corners of the racks and if necessary further strengthen the fabric. However, the best to wait and see whether the canvas loose over time. If so, you hit the keys in the slots at the time.
Note that today, the Most artists use staples and a staple gun to attach the fabric to the frame. This approach is faster and more convenient. However, for the sake of permanence and stability, is still a good idea to use a common tactic in the middle of each of the bars.
Finally, when a painting is finished you may want to place free a piece of cardboard in the back of the couch. This will protect the back of the canvas.
Once used to the procedure, stretching a canvas is fairly quickly. It's a little cheaper than buying pre-stretched canvas. However, there remains the task of priming the canvas if you bought a roll of raw canvas. But as a canvas stretching concerned, this is all there is to do.
