Many have been talking about what's behind the change USGA Golf Club Groove. The USGA put new restrictions on the sharpness on the edges of the slot and the clubface.
Many professionals have dominated the shots of the rough to the green with backspin club slots. This new rule was made to bring back the challenge. In Most of this new standard primarily affects the PGA professionals and not people like you and me who are playing for fun.
These rules apply to clubs that are made post January 1, 2010 which is the same year that new legislation will apply.
There are four new standards that revolve around the manufacture of club head grooves. The first rule has to do with hard edges. The edges of the slot must have a radius of them and not be perfectly square. Currently, when clubs blend this results in sharp edges, where professionals can obtain considerable money and here is where the game will change. A negative to this for us all Golfers on Joe is that manufactures have to change the way clubs are made and therefore increased costs.
Second, and how the slots the club the way they are measured has changed. An added measure that has to do with the size of the dimensions of the slot per inch of the clubface.
Thirdly there are conditions on these new rules having to do with the grooves of the club. The new clause is the condition "of competition" which translates the fact that the card allows the tournament to decide whether or not to apply. Further investigation basically suggests that this really applies only to expert players, PGA professional manner and USGA.
These rules are said to be applied at least three major tournaments in 2010. The USGA is saying that all the teams that are currently approved by this rule will be approved until 2024. All these rules stated above is the result of about three years of testing and research conducted by the USGA.
It is important to note that the clubs currently satisfied with V-grooves can be with the new regulations. The new set of rules do not require the use of a V-shaped slot in the opinion. Club designers under the new rules can now vary the groove depth, width and spacing.
